Perl is used everywhere... you can use it as a general purpose programming language, or as a complement of another programming language (mostly web Prog. languages).
Perl is very powerful, for example you can easily access and use "objects libraries" for general purposes, for example I use it to automate tasks in my computer like computing large amounts of data, and then sending emails with the analysis of the results, or maybe interfacing with my programs like writing Excel sheets, Word documents, and SOOOO on... or you can use it to download movies from Google video and transform them into .AVI files ( from Google Hacks by O'reilly), or youtube... those are the uses I have learned and explored since I began to learn this amazing programming language (1 month ago... not kidding...).
In conclusion, I would say that the options are very WIDE to tell you about them here so If you want to know more about PERL(maybe because the above uses weren't enough for you) you can start reading some tutorials in the WEB or you can buy a book about programming in Perl like the O'reilly series, they're awesome.
