Why is there a camel on the O'Reilly Perl book?

I read this answer on the O'Reilly publishing site some time ago. It originated when the cover designer was approached to do the new cover art for the O'Reilly publications. He was asked to do the artwork for some UNIX books, and all of the UNIX terms he heard sounded like strange animals. Couple this with the fact that he then happened upon some wood engravings of animals, and the history of O'Reilly publications having silly animals on their book covers was born.

If you've got the "Programming Perl", there should be a colophon at the very end of the book. Below is a link describing how to get answers to why the camel, and permission to use the camel.
